Before Britney Spears became a phenomenal pop superstar, at the tender age of eight she entered New York City’s Professional Performing Arts School and became an understudy for the play Ruthless! in 1991 where one of the other understudies for the said play was V for Vendetta star Natalie Portman. She appeared in several off-Broadway productions when at age 11 she joined The New Mickey Mouse Club along with other soon-to-be-famous celebrities like Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, JC Chasez, Keri Russel and Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling. The show aired on television for four years until management decided to cancel it in 1994.
Spears was at her prime when she decided to enter show business and had her first acting debut in a lead role for the movie Crossroads in 2002 where she played the role of a high school graduate who went on the road in search of her long-lost mother. Sadly, the movie was poorly received by the public due to her poor performance as an actress which landed her at the Razzie’s and won an award for Worst Actress and her song “Not Yet a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” from the film soundtrack bagged the Worst Original Song award. Despite these setbacks, the movie grossed over $60 million in the box office. She did made cameo roles for two other movies like Austin Powers In Goldmember (with Mike Myers) and Longshot. Spears was also included in the film documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 where several footages of her were used including a 2003 interview with CNN where she spoke about the war in Iraq.
She also appeared in the TV sitcom Sabrina, the Teenage Witch in 1999 and performed her hit single “(You Drive Me) Crazy”. It was some sort of promotion for the film Drive Me Crazy which starred Melissa Joan Hart. Spears made appearances on Saturday Night Live as host and musical guest in 2000, 2002 and 2003 and in 2006, she raised eyebrows after guesting in one of the episodes of Will & Grace where she played the role of a closet lesbian. Several conservative Christian groups were outraged with her role on the show and was heavily criticized. In 2008, she re-appears on television and guest-starred on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother where she played as a receptionist. Spears received unexpected praises and good reviews for her performance as the show garnered high ratings during its three season run and she is now currently negotiating a second guest appearance on the show’s second episode.
